- What was measured
- Efflux of carnosine and beta-alanine from cultured rat oligodendrocytes after glutamate, kainate (with or without cyclothiazide), DNQX, zinc, GABA, potassium chloride or calcium ionophore.
What the authors reported
The authors saw no evoked release of carnosine or beta-alanine with 1 mM glutamate or 0.3 mM kainate alone. Adding 0.1 mM cyclothiazide produced a distinct peak of release of both. DNQX (50 micromolar) blocked the efflux completely with kainate and by 80% with glutamate. Zinc increased efflux in a concentration-dependent way, GABA or 55 mM KCl had a negligible effect, and calcium ionophore A 23187 caused a large release. The author suggests the release is glutamate receptor-mediated and depends on raised intracellular calcium.
