- What was measured
- Immunoperoxidase and double-immunofluorescence localisation of carnosinase in human nasal mucosa.
What the authors reported
Carnosinase was found in olfactory supporting cells, Bowman's gland acinar cells and a subset of olfactory receptor neurons, and in secretory vesicles of respiratory goblet and glandular cells. Staining intensity showed a trend to decline with age. The authors propose that the enzyme supplies amino acids from carnosine hydrolysis for protein synthesis and mucus production.
Limits of this study
Tissue localisation by immunostaining; the number of donors and tissue source are not stated in the abstract. Full text not read.
