- What was measured
- Fragmentation and loss of activity of human Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase incubated with hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical formation, and the effect of hydroxyl radical scavengers, carnosine, homocarnosine and anserine.
What the authors reported
Hydrogen peroxide fragmented Cu,Zn-SOD and hydroxyl radical scavengers (azide, formate, mannitol) prevented this, implicating the hydroxyl radical. Carnosine, homocarnosine and anserine significantly protected against fragmentation and loss of enzyme activity and inhibited hydroxyl radical formation by the SOD/H2O2 system.
Limits of this study
