Carnosine inhibits degradation of hyaluronan induced by free radical processes in vitro and improves the redox imbalance in adjuvant arthritis in vivo
Laboratory studyOther animals
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Dose used in the study
- 200 umol/L carnosine in vitro (methotrexate compared at up to 400 umol/L); animal dose not stated in abstract
- What was measured
- Free-radical degradation of hyaluronan in vitro (carnosine compared with methotrexate and glutathione); plasma TBARS, protein carbonyls and hind-paw volume in rats with adjuvant arthritis.
What the authors reported
In vitro, 200 umol/L carnosine protected hyaluronan from free-radical degradation. Methotrexate was less effective, with protection evident only at its highest concentration of 400 umol/L. In adjuvant arthritis rats, carnosine significantly reduced plasma TBARS and protein carbonyls and decreased hind-paw volume, most effectively on day 14.
Limits of this study
Rat model; route and dose in vivo, and group sizes, not stated in abstract. Rodents lack serum carnosinase, so results do not carry over to people. Full text not read.
