Laboratory study
What was measured
Nitric oxide synthesis, inducible nitric oxide synthase expression, TNF-alpha secretion and carbonyl formation in LPS-stimulated BV2 microglial cells treated with carnosine or N-acetylcarnosine; direct interaction of N-acetylcarnosine with nitric oxide by spectrophotometry and mass spectrometry.

What the authors reported

Carnosine and N-acetylcarnosine reduced LPS-induced nitric oxide synthesis and iNOS expression by 60 and 70 percent respectively, and both reduced TNF-alpha secretion and carbonyl formation. N-acetylcarnosine was more potent than carnosine and was shown to interact directly with nitric oxide.

Limits of this study

Microglial cell line; concentrations not stated in abstract. Abstract only.
