Enhanced carnosine (beta-alanyl-L-histidine) breakdown and histamine metabolism following treatment with compound 48/80
Laboratory studyOther animals
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Dose used in the study
- Compound 48/80 at 5 mg/kg intraperitoneally (carnosine itself was not administered)
- What was measured
- Muscle carnosinase and histidine decarboxylase activities and muscle carnosine, histidine and histamine concentrations over 72 hours in male rats after compound 48/80.
What the authors reported
Compound 48/80 produced a 120 percent rise in muscle histidine decarboxylase activity and a 110 percent rise in histamine at 15 minutes, followed by an 80 percent rise in muscle carnosinase at 1 hour and a 100 percent fall in muscle carnosine at 24 hours; histidine was unchanged. The sequence suggests carnosine is hydrolysed to supply histidine for histamine synthesis, acting as a histidine reservoir.
Limits of this study
Rat pharmacological challenge; no carnosine dosing. Abstract only.
