Carnosine and taurine contents in individual fibres of human vastus lateralis muscle
Laboratory studyHumans
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Subjects
- 4 male subjects
- What was measured
- Carnosine and taurine content in single type I and type II fibres from vastus lateralis biopsies.
What the authors reported
Carnosine was about twice as high in type II fibres as in type I fibres (about 23.2 versus 10.5 mmol/kg dry weight). Taurine showed the reverse pattern and was about four times higher in type I fibres. The authors suggest the higher carnosine in type II fibres contributes to hydrogen ion buffering during anaerobic work.
Limits of this study
Four subjects, descriptive biopsy study. Abstract only.
