- What was measured
- Singlet oxygen scavenging by more than 30 imidazole compounds, with singlet oxygen generated by illuminated phenosafranin in pH 7.5 phosphate buffer at 25 degrees C.
What the authors reported
Imidazole-4-acetic acid, a major histamine catabolite, was the most active of over 30 imidazole compounds. On a molar basis carnosine reacted with singlet oxygen two to four times faster than free histidine and about twice as fast as the N-terminal histidine dipeptides tested, and its scavenging did not appreciably rise or fall over the reaction, unlike several other imidazole compounds. Ergothioneine blocked singlet oxygen generation by the illuminated dye.
