The effects of 10 weeks of resistance training combined with beta-alanine supplementation on whole body strength, force production, muscular endurance and body composition
Randomised controlled trialHumansWith beta-alanine (carnosine precursor) with resistance training
This study tested carnosine together with beta-alanine (carnosine precursor) with resistance training. Its results cannot be assigned to carnosine alone. More combination studies.
- Design
- Randomised controlled trial
- Subjects
- 26 sports science students
- Dose used in the study
- 6.4 g/day beta-alanine
- Duration
- 10 weeks
- What was measured
- Muscle carnosine by biopsy; whole-body strength, force production, muscular endurance, body mass and body fat.
What the authors reported
Muscle carnosine rose by 12.81 +/- 7.97 mmol/kg dry muscle in the beta-alanine group and did not change with placebo. Beta-alanine had no significant effect on any strength, endurance or body-composition measure beyond training alone. Resistance training by itself did not change muscle carnosine.
Limits of this study
