L-carnosine inhibits high-glucose-mediated matrix accumulation in human mesangial cells by interfering with TGF-beta production and signalling
Laboratory studyOther animals
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Dose used in the study
- 20 mM L-carnosine in culture medium
- What was measured
- Collagen VI and fibronectin deposition, TGF-beta production and Smad2 phosphorylation in human mesangial cells exposed to 25 mM glucose.
What the authors reported
High glucose raised collagen VI and fibronectin by about 1.4 to 1.6-fold. Carnosine blocked the collagen VI increase at the protein level, reduced TGF-beta production and Smad2 phosphorylation, and exogenous TGF-beta did not reverse its effect on fibronectin. The authors propose action through the ALK5 pathway.
Limits of this study
Cell culture at a 20 mM concentration far above plasma levels. Full text not read.
