Protective effect of carnosine on subcortical ischemic vascular dementia in mice
Laboratory studyOther animals
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Dose used in the study
- 200 and 500 mg/kg carnosine
- What was measured
- White matter lesions, cognition (object recognition, passive avoidance and Morris water maze), myelin basic protein in the corpus callosum at day 37, GFAP and Iba-1 (astrocyte and microglial activation) and reactive oxygen species in adult male C57BL/6 wild-type and histidine decarboxylase knockout mice after right unilateral common carotid artery occlusion.
What the authors reported
Carnosine at 200 and 500 mg/kg ameliorated white matter lesions and cognitive impairment in both wild-type and knockout mice, while histidine did not. Carnosine largely reversed the fall in myelin basic protein at day 37, suppressed microglial and astrocyte activation and attenuated the rise in reactive oxygen species. The authors concluded the effect did not depend on the histaminergic pathway.
