Chicken Breast Attenuates High-Intensity-Exercise-Induced Decrease in Rat Sarcoplasmic Reticulum Ca2+ Handling

Mishima T, Yamada T, Sakamoto M, et al.. International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, 2008; 18(4):399-411.

Controlled trialOther animalsWith chicken breast extract (carnosine and anserine source)

This study tested carnosine together with chicken breast extract (carnosine and anserine source). Its results cannot be assigned to carnosine alone. More combination studies.

Design
Controlled trial
Dose used in the study
diet containing chicken breast extract
Duration
5 weeks
What was measured
Muscle carnosine and anserine; sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium handling after a 2.5 min high-intensity run in rats.

What the authors reported

Five weeks of chicken breast extract raised rat muscle carnosine by about 15% and anserine by about 45% (p < 0.01). In resting muscle it lowered sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase activity without changing Ca2+ uptake and release rates. After high-intensity running, sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ handling fell less in extract-fed rats than in standard-chow rats (p < 0.05). The extract is a source of histidine-containing dipeptides generally, not carnosine alone.

Limits of this study

Group sizes not stated in abstract. Rodents lack serum carnosinase, so oral results do not carry over to people. Full text not read.
