What was measured
Carnosine and anserine by HPLC with a carbon column in Thoroughbred tissues: liver, kidney, jejunum, spleen, aorta, oesophagus, bladder, stomach, and five skeletal muscles (flexor carpi radialis, triceps brachii, masseter, gluteus medius, sternocleidomastoid).

What the authors reported

The authors report high carnosine in skeletal muscle and no detectable anserine. No carnosine was found in liver, kidney, jejunum, spleen or aorta; small amounts in oesophagus, bladder and stomach. Of the five muscles, gluteus medius had the highest carnosine, which the authors relate to fibre type.

Limits of this study

Abstract gives no concentrations and no horse numbers. Small Japanese journal; full text in Japanese not checked.
