The effect of carnosine on the healing of a lung wound
Controlled trialOther animals
- Design
- Controlled trial
- Subjects
- 90 guinea pigs
- What was measured
- Light and electron microscopy of lung wound repair with and without carnosine.
What the authors reported
Compared with controls, carnosine nearly doubled the speed of reparative processes in the injured guinea pig lung, through activation of fibroblast proliferation, connective tissue generation and intracellular regeneration. Type II epithelial cells formed more osmiophilic and lamellar bodies, and alveolus formation in the wound lips continued by days 7 to 8. The authors link this to faster resolution of atelectasis and restored lung airness.
