Nitric oxide involves in carnosine-induced hyperactivity in chicks

Tomonaga S, Tachibana T, Takahashi H, et al.. European Journal of Pharmacology, 2005; 524(1-3):84-88.

Laboratory studyOther animals

Design
Laboratory study
Dose used in the study
3.2 micromol carnosine intracerebroventricularly
What was measured
Locomotor hyperactivity in chicks after intracerebroventricular carnosine, co-administered with a non-selective NOS inhibitor (L-NAME), its inactive isomer or a selective iNOS inhibitor.

What the authors reported

Carnosine-induced hyperactivity was attenuated dose-dependently by L-NAME (200 and 400 nmol) but not by the inactive D-isomer or by a selective iNOS inhibitor. The authors conclude the behavioural effect is linked to constitutive nitric oxide synthase.

Limits of this study

Chick model with central injection. Abstract only.
