Oral administration of chicken breast extract increases brain carnosine and anserine concentrations in rats
Laboratory studyOther animalsWith anserine (as chicken breast extract)
This study tested carnosine together with anserine (as chicken breast extract). Its results cannot be assigned to carnosine alone. More combination studies.
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Dose used in the study
- Single oral dose of chicken breast extract, 20 ml/kg
- What was measured
- Plasma, hippocampal, hypothalamic and cerebral cortex carnosine and anserine, and citrulline, in male Wistar rats at 120 minutes.
What the authors reported
Chicken breast extract significantly and time-dependently raised carnosine and anserine in plasma (by 2976 and 4142% at 120 minutes), hippocampus (64 and 78%) and hypothalamus (188 and 120%), but not cerebral cortex. Citrulline rose 49% in hippocampus and 41% in hypothalamus, which the authors read as nitric oxide generation due to the higher dipeptide levels.
Limits of this study
Single dose in rats; sample size not stated in abstract. Rodents lack serum carnosinase, so oral results do not carry over to people. Full text not read.
