Carnosine pretreatment protects against hypoxia-ischemia brain damage in the neonatal rat model
Laboratory studyOther animals
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Dose used in the study
- 250 mg/kg carnosine intraperitoneally, 30 minutes before hypoxia-ischaemia on postnatal day 7
- What was measured
- Infarct volume, TUNEL-positive cells, mRNA for apoptosis-inducing factor and caspase-3, superoxide dismutase activity and malondialdehyde at 24 hours, and Morris water maze performance on postnatal days 28 to 33.
What the authors reported
Carnosine pretreatment significantly reduced infarct volume and TUNEL-positive cells, inhibited AIF and caspase-3 mRNA, raised superoxide dismutase activity and lowered malondialdehyde. Carnosine also improved the spatial learning and memory deficits produced by hypoxia-ischaemia. The authors attribute the protection to antioxidant action.
Limits of this study
Neonatal rat model with injected pretreatment; group sizes not stated in abstract. Abstract only.
