Protective effects of L- and D-carnosine on alpha-crystallin amyloid fibril formation: implications for cataract disease

- What was measured
- Amyloid-like fibril formation and chaperone activity of bovine alpha-crystallin under mildly denaturing conditions; lens transparency in organ-cultured rat lenses.
What the authors reported
Both L- and D-carnosine inhibited alpha-crystallin fibrillation, restored chaperone activity lost after denaturant and heat stress, and disassembled existing fibrils. Carnosine also helped preserve transparency of organ-cultured rat lenses exposed to the same conditions.
Limits of this study
In vitro and organ culture; concentrations not stated in abstract. Full text not read.
