- What was measured
- Lens clouding, fluorescent lipid peroxidation products in vitreous, aqueous humour and lens, and lens reduced glutathione in rabbits after intravitreal injection of liposomes containing lipid peroxidation products, with and without L-carnosine.
What the authors reported
Intravitreal liposomes carrying lipid peroxidation products produced posterior subcapsular cataract, with accumulation of fluorescent peroxidation products and a fall in lens glutathione; saturated liposomes did not cloud the lens. L-carnosine inhibited or reversed the formation of this cataract, with normalisation of peroxide metabolism in the lens.
Limits of this study
Rabbit model with an artificial oxidative insult; route of carnosine administration and numbers not stated in abstract. Abstract only.
