Effects of carnosine supplementation on glucose metabolism: Pilot clinical trial
Randomised controlled trialHumans
- Design
- Randomised controlled trial
- Subjects
- 30 (15 carnosine, 15 placebo)
- Dose used in the study
- 2 g carnosine per day
- Duration
- 12 weeks
- What was measured
- Fasting insulin, insulin resistance, 2-hour glucose and insulin after an oral glucose tolerance test, urinary carnosine, in non-diabetic adults with overweight or obesity.
What the authors reported
Carnosine raised urinary carnosine levels. Compared with placebo it prevented an increase in fasting insulin and insulin resistance. In participants with impaired glucose tolerance, 2-hour glucose and insulin were lower after carnosine. The authors described this as a pilot trial and called for larger studies.
Limits of this study
Small pilot trial (30 participants). Single centre. Twelve weeks only. Several outcomes reported in a subgroup.
