Protective effect of carnosine against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in mice
Laboratory studyOther animals
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Dose used in the study
- 10 mg/kg/day carnosine intraperitoneally for 6 days, starting 3 days before a single 20 mg/kg cisplatin injection
- Duration
- 6 days
- What was measured
- Blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, renal cortical malondialdehyde, reduced glutathione, catalase and superoxide dismutase, and histopathological scoring in mice.
What the authors reported
Carnosine significantly reduced the cisplatin-induced rise in blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine, attenuated the increase in malondialdehyde and the falls in glutathione, catalase and superoxide dismutase, and markedly reduced renal tubular necrosis on histology.
Limits of this study
Mouse study with injected carnosine; group sizes not stated in abstract. Abstract only.
