Beta-alanyl-L-histidine rescues cognitive deficits caused by feeding a high fat diet in a transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's disease

- not stated in abstract
- Dose used in the study
- 5 mg/day
- Duration
- 6 weeks (high-fat diet 8 weeks)
- What was measured
- Contextual memory, amyloid plaque load, vascular RAGE expression and hippocampal microglial activation in 4-month-old Alzheimer's model mice fed a 32% fat diet.
What the authors reported
The high-fat diet caused significant contextual memory decline versus normal diet. Carnosine 5 mg/day for 6 weeks prevented the decline, with cognition comparable to controls, while plaque load was unchanged. The diet raised vascular RAGE and microglial activation in the hippocampus and carnosine reversed both.
Limits of this study
Transgenic mouse model; route of carnosine administration not stated in abstract. Rodents lack serum carnosinase, so oral results do not carry over to people. Full text not read.
