l-Carnosine supplementation attenuated fasting glucose, triglycerides, advanced glycation end products, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha levels in patients with type 2 diabetes: a double-blind placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial
Randomised controlled trialHumans
- Design
- Randomised controlled trial
- Subjects
- 54 adults with type 2 diabetes (27 carnosine, 27 placebo)
- Dose used in the study
- 1 g carnosine per day (two 500 mg capsules)
- Duration
- 12 weeks
- What was measured
- Fasting glucose, HbA1c, lipids, body composition, advanced glycation end products (carboxymethyl lysine, pentosidine), sRAGE, TNF-alpha, IL-6, IL-1beta, dietary intake.
What the authors reported
Compared with placebo, carnosine lowered fasting glucose (by 13.1 mg/dL), HbA1c (by 0.6%), triglycerides (by 29.8 mg/dL), carboxymethyl lysine (by 91.8 ng/mL) and TNF-alpha (p < 0.05). Fat mass fell 1.5% and fat-free mass rose 1.7% relative to placebo. Pentosidine fell by 2.8 ng/mL from baseline in the carnosine group only. Fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, cholesterol fractions, blood pressure, sRAGE, IL-6 and IL-1beta did not differ between groups after adjustment.
