Ginger extract and polaprezinc exert gastroprotective actions by anti-oxidant and growth factor modulating effects in rats
Laboratory studyOther animalsWith zinc (as polaprezinc); ginger extract tested in parallel
This study tested carnosine together with zinc (as polaprezinc); ginger extract tested in parallel. Its results cannot be assigned to carnosine alone. More combination studies.
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Dose used in the study
- polaprezinc 30 or 60 mg/kg once daily by mouth; ginger extract 1.5 to 5 g/kg
- Duration
- 3 days of dosing, killed on day 5
- What was measured
- Ulcer area, xanthine oxidase, myeloperoxidase, malondialdehyde, glutathione, growth factor and cytokine expression in male Sprague-Dawley rats with acetic acid-induced gastric ulcers.
What the authors reported
Both ginger extract and polaprezinc reduced ulcer area dose-dependently and lowered xanthine oxidase, myeloperoxidase and malondialdehyde in ulcerated mucosa. Only polaprezinc restored mucosal glutathione. Polaprezinc increased basic fibroblast growth factor, vascular endothelial growth factor and ornithine decarboxylase and lowered TNF-alpha, interleukin-1 beta and two chemokines; ginger increased two growth factors and mainly lowered chemokines. The authors describe both as effective mucosal protective agents.
Limits of this study
Animal numbers not stated in abstract. Rodents lack serum carnosinase, so oral results do not carry over to people. Full text not read.
