Polaprezinc exerts a salutary effect on impaired healing of acute gastric lesions in diabetic rats

Korolkiewicz RP, Fujita A, Seto K, et al.. Digestive Diseases and Sciences, 2000; 45(6):1200-1209.

Laboratory studyOther animalsWith zinc (as polaprezinc)

This study tested carnosine together with zinc (as polaprezinc). Its results cannot be assigned to carnosine alone. More combination studies.

Design
Laboratory study
Dose used in the study
Polaprezinc 3 to 30 mg/kg, or zinc sulfate and L-carnosine alone or combined, orally twice daily
Duration
4 days after HCl injury
What was measured
Healing of HCl-induced gastric lesions over 10 days in streptozotocin-diabetic rats, blood glucose, acid secretion and mucosal IGF-I mRNA, with insulin, polaprezinc, its components or recombinant IGF-I.

What the authors reported

Diabetes did not change lesion formation but markedly delayed healing; insulin corrected this. Polaprezinc above 10 mg/kg significantly reversed the healing delay without affecting glucose or acid secretion; zinc sulfate alone or with L-carnosine showed similar trends but L-carnosine alone did not. Mucosal IGF-I mRNA was reduced in diabetic rats and partly restored by insulin and polaprezinc, and recombinant IGF-I also promoted healing.

Limits of this study

Rat model; the carnosine component alone was ineffective, so the effect is attributed to zinc. One author is from the manufacturer (Zeria). Rodents lack serum carnosinase, so oral results do not carry over to people. Abstract only.
