Antineoplastic effects of carnosine and beta-alanine: physiological considerations of its antineoplastic effects
Controlled trialOther animals
- Design
- Controlled trial
- Dose used in the study
- subcutaneous, 2 cm from the implantation site, starting the day after implantation; doses not stated in abstract
- What was measured
- Survival, tumour growth and tumour regression in ddY mice implanted subcutaneously with 10^5 trypsin-treated Sarcoma-180 cells, treated with carnosine, beta-alanine, or either with the immunostimulant OK-432 or after tumour attenuation with mitomycin C.
What the authors reported
Beta-alanine alone prolonged survival to a T/C of 132%. Carnosine alone inhibited tumour growth and reduced mortality. Tumour regression was seen with either. Effects were enhanced with OK-432: more than half the animals given carnosine plus OK-432 survived the observation period (T/C above 218%), and beta-alanine plus OK-432 gave a T/C of 132%. Both agents also showed antineoplastic effects on tumours attenuated in vivo with mitomycin C.
