Carnosine retards tumor growth in vivo in an NIH3T3-HER2/neu mouse model
Controlled trialOther animals
- Design
- Controlled trial
- Dose used in the study
- 500 microlitres of 1 M carnosine solution daily by intraperitoneal injection; controls received intraperitoneal NaCl
- Duration
- 24 days of observation
- What was measured
- Growth of HER2/neu-overexpressing NIH3T3 tumours implanted in nude mice; mitotic counts.
What the authors reported
Measurable tumours appeared 12 days after implantation in two independent experiments. Aggressive growth began about day 16 in controls and was delayed to about day 19 with carnosine, and a significant effect on tumour growth was seen up to day 24. Treated tumours had fewer mitoses (p < 0.0003), but carnosine did not completely prevent tumour growth.
