What was measured
CNDP1 exon 2 CTG repeat alleles (4 to 8 leucines) in diabetic patients, and carnosinase secretion from Cos-7 cells transfected with each variant.

What the authors reported

Diabetic patients without nephropathy were more often homozygous for the 5-leucine allele. Cos-7 cells expressing the longer leucine variants secreted significantly more serum carnosinase than cells expressing the 5-leucine form. The authors propose this explains the low serum carnosinase activity seen in people with the protective genotype.

Limits of this study

Secretion data come from a transfected cell line, not human serum. Patient numbers not stated in abstract. Full text not read.
