Efficacy and safety of polaprezinc in the treatment of gastric ulcer: A multicenter, randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, positive-controlled clinical trial
Randomised controlled trialHumansWith zinc (as polaprezinc / zinc-L-carnosine)
This study tested carnosine together with zinc (as polaprezinc / zinc-L-carnosine). Its results cannot be assigned to carnosine alone. More combination studies.
- Design
- Randomised controlled trial
- Subjects
- 224 patients with gastric ulcer from 10 centres (111 polaprezinc, 113 rebamipide)
- Dose used in the study
- Polaprezinc tablets (dose not stated in abstract) versus rebamipide tablets
- Duration
- 8 weeks
- What was measured
- Primary: effective treatment rate confirmed by gastroscopy at 8 weeks. Secondary: improvement in gastrointestinal symptoms at 4 and 8 weeks. Adverse events.
What the authors reported
Effective rates were 81.48% with polaprezinc and 74.31% with rebamipide (p = 0.1557). Symptom improvement rates were 44.44% versus 39.45% (p = 0.4559) and 81.48% versus 77.06% (p = 0.4223). Adverse events were similar. The authors concluded polaprezinc was similar to rebamipide for gastric ulcer.
Limits of this study
Active comparator, no placebo. Dose not in abstract. Published in an engineering journal, which is unusual for a drug trial. Full text not read.
