- What was measured
- Review of carnosine derivatives designed to keep reactivity with reactive carbonyl species while resisting serum carnosinase, with background on AGEs and ALEs as drug targets.
What the authors reported
The authors review evidence that carnosine inhibits AGE and ALE formation in vitro and in some animal models by deactivating reactive carbonyl species. They state that these effects are limited in humans because serum carnosinase, which is absent in rodents, hydrolyses carnosine, and this has driven the design of carnosinase-resistant derivatives optimised for reactivity, selectivity and pharmacokinetics.
