Carnosine enhances diabetic wound healing in the db/db mouse model of type 2 diabetes
Laboratory studyOther animals
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Dose used in the study
- 100 mg/kg carnosine intraperitoneally every day, plus local application to the wound
- What was measured
- Closure of 6 mm circular skin wounds in db/db diabetic mice assessed every other day; expression of growth factor and cytokine genes in wound tissue; viability of human dermal fibroblasts and microvascular endothelial cells in high glucose.
What the authors reported
Carnosine treatment enhanced wound healing significantly in db/db mice, and wound tissue showed increased expression of growth factor and cytokine genes involved in healing. In culture, carnosine increased the viability of human dermal fibroblasts and microvascular endothelial cells exposed to high glucose.
Limits of this study
Mouse model with injected plus topical dosing; group sizes and effect sizes not stated in abstract. Abstract only.
