Protection against adriamycin-induced cardiomyopathy by carnosine in rats: role of endogenous antioxidants
Laboratory studyOther animals
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Dose used in the study
- 10 mg/kg/day carnosine intraperitoneally; adriamycin 16 mg/kg single dose on day 14
- Duration
- 2 weeks before and continuing after adriamycin
- What was measured
- Plasma creatine kinase, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and catalase, lipid peroxidation, haemodynamics (LVDP), ECG (ST interval) and heart histopathology in four groups of rats.
What the authors reported
A single dose of adriamycin produced haemodynamic change, histological damage, lower plasma antioxidant enzyme activities and higher lipid peroxidation. Carnosine given for 2 weeks before and after adriamycin significantly attenuated the cardiomyopathy, normalising LVDP, ST interval, creatine kinase, SOD, GSH-Px, catalase and lipid peroxidation.
Limits of this study
Rat model with injected carnosine; group sizes not stated in abstract. Published online 2010, in print 2011. Abstract only.
