Effect of Anserine/Carnosine Supplementation on Verbal Episodic Memory in Elderly People

Hisatsune T, Kaneko J, Kurashige H, et al.. Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, 2016; 50(1):149-159.

Randomised controlled trialHumansWith anserine (3:1 anserine to carnosine formula)

This study tested carnosine together with anserine (3:1 anserine to carnosine formula). Its results cannot be assigned to carnosine alone. More combination studies.

Design
Randomised controlled trial
Subjects
39 healthy volunteers aged 60 to 78 completed follow-up (double-blind, 1:1 randomisation); a second randomised trial is also reported
Dose used in the study
1.0 g per day of a 3:1 anserine/carnosine formula
Duration
3 months
What was measured
Wechsler Memory Scale-Logical Memory (delayed verbal recall), blood cytokines (CCL-2, IL-8), and brain blood flow by arterial spin labelling MRI.

What the authors reported

Delayed verbal recall was preserved in the supplement group compared with placebo (p = 0.0128). Secretion of inflammatory cytokines CCL-2 and IL-8 decreased. Age-related decline in blood flow in the posterior cingulate cortex was suppressed compared with placebo (p = 0.0248). A second randomised trial reported in the same paper found similar preservation of delayed recall (p = 0.0202).

Limits of this study

Small trials; group sizes and the second trial's size are not given in the abstract. Mostly anserine (3:1 anserine to carnosine), not carnosine alone. Three months. The authors say further study is needed. Full text not read.
