Daily Carnosine and Anserine Supplementation Alters Verbal Episodic Memory and Resting State Network Connectivity in Healthy Elderly Adults
Randomised controlled trialHumansWith anserine (carnosine to anserine ratio 1:3)
This study tested carnosine together with anserine (carnosine to anserine ratio 1:3). Its results cannot be assigned to carnosine alone. More combination studies.
- Design
- Randomised controlled trial
- Subjects
- 31 healthy adults aged 40 to 78 (10 male, 21 female); 14 supplement, 17 placebo
- Dose used in the study
- 500 mg imidazole dipeptide formula (carnosine to anserine ratio 1:3) twice daily, versus identical placebo
- Duration
- 3 months
- What was measured
- Neuropsychological tests and resting-state functional MRI connectivity at baseline and 3 months.
What the authors reported
Groups did not differ at baseline. After 3 months the supplement group performed better on verbal episodic memory and showed reduced connectivity in the default mode network (posterior cingulate cortex and right fronto-parietal network) compared with placebo. Cognitive changes correlated with the imaging changes.
Limits of this study
Small study (31 people). Wide age range. Mostly anserine. No p-values given in the abstract. Full text not read.
