- What was measured
- Review of carnosine's effects on cardiac contractility and vascular tone, mostly from isolated rat heart and myocyte work.
What the authors reported
The authors found carnosine dramatically increased contractility when perfused into isolated rat hearts. The effect was not mediated by histamine or beta-adrenergic receptors or by cyclic AMP, but carnosine raised myoplasmic calcium. In chemically skinned cardiac cells it released calcium, produced contracture and altered the tension response to calcium, and it acted directly on the ryanodine receptor calcium release channel, increasing open-state probability and dwell time.
Limits of this study
Review of mostly in vitro and animal data, largely the authors' own work. Full text not read.
