Effect of polaprezinc (N-(3-aminopropionyl)-L-histidinato zinc), a novel antiulcer agent containing zinc, on cellular proliferation: role of insulin-like growth factor I
Laboratory studyOther animalsWith zinc (as polaprezinc)
This study tested carnosine together with zinc (as polaprezinc). Its results cannot be assigned to carnosine alone. More combination studies.
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Dose used in the study
- Polaprezinc 1 nM to 30 nM in culture
- What was measured
- BrdU uptake, cell number and IGF-I mRNA in human umbilical vein endothelial cells, human foreskin fibroblasts and guinea pig gastric epithelial cells exposed to polaprezinc, L-carnosine or zinc sulfate under low serum.
What the authors reported
Polaprezinc increased BrdU uptake and cell number in endothelial cells and fibroblasts but not in gastric epithelial cells. L-carnosine alone had no effect, while zinc sulfate had a weaker proliferative effect than polaprezinc. Polaprezinc raised IGF-I mRNA and an anti-IGF-I antibody suppressed its effect on BrdU uptake.
Limits of this study
Cell culture study from the manufacturer (Zeria Pharmaceutical). Abstract only.
