A leucine repeat in the carnosinase gene CNDP1 is associated with diabetic end-stage renal disease in European Americans
Observational studyHumans
- Design
- Observational study
- Subjects
- 858 European Americans (294 with type 2 diabetic nephropathy-associated ESRD, 258 with diabetes without nephropathy, 306 healthy controls)
- What was measured
- CNDP1 leucine-repeat (5L-5L) genotype frequency across the three groups.
What the authors reported
People with diabetes but no nephropathy (P=0.02) and healthy controls (P=0.008) were more often homozygous for the 5-leucine (5-5) CNDP1 genotype than people with diabetic ESRD. The 5-5 frequency did not differ between healthy controls and diabetic controls (P=0.74). The authors conclude the 5-5 genotype is associated with reduced risk of diabetic ESRD in this population, replicating earlier findings in European Caucasians and Arabs.
Limits of this study
Case-control genetic association; no measurement of carnosine or carnosinase activity reported in the abstract. Full text not read.
